The Salt Room

Cornwall, England

Information

Granite walls, a slate floor and salt in the air, which rules out most finishes. We specified for the climate first and the look second, and the room ended up better for it.

Scope Of Work

  • Architectural Planning

The cellar's original openings were reinstated from a 1911 survey drawing rather than invented.

  • Interior Styling

Untreated granite, waxed steel and linen. Every surface is something salt cannot spoil.

  • Furniture Specification

Benches in reclaimed pitch pine, built long so strangers share them.

  • Lighting & Atmosphere

Warm and low. The windows do the work until about four, then the room turns to candles.
